Individual characteristics

  • Age.
  • Sex.
  • First three digits of postal code (not always collected).
  • Past medical history (not always collected).
  • medications used by patient in past 30 days (not always collected).

Crash related characteristics 

  • whether the patient is a driver or a passenger (note: we only started collecting passenger data in BC & ON since 2020).
  • Month & year of the crash.
  • Time of crash: Available as four-hour time blocks (0201-0600, 0601-1000, etc.).
  • Whether the crash happened on a weekend or a statutory holiday.
  • Type of crash: single- or multiple-vehicle crash.
  • Type of vehicle: passenger car, van or light truck, motorcycle,  or large commercial vehicle.
  • Brief description of the crash.
  • Patient’s mental status at scene, and upon arrival in ED (this information is not always collected).
  • Alcohol level at ED < 6 hours from the time of the accident (this information is not always collected).

Treatment related items

  • Whether the patient is transferred to ED by ambulance or not.
  • disposition from ED: home, expired in ED, or admitted to hospital.
    • If admitted, length of stay.
  • GCS at scene and at ED
  • Medications given at scene, and medication given upon arrival.
  • Whether CT scan is ordered.
